New Study Shows UV Suppresses MS Syptoms

A University of Wisconsin study suggests that UV exposure, totally independent of vitamin D production, suppresses an animal model of multiple sclerosis — another indication that UV exposure’s positive influence extends well beyond vitamin D production.

Researchers, including University of Wisconsin vitamin D pioneer Dr. Hector DeLuca, used UVB light on subjects with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, a form of multiple sclerosis studied in animal models. The subjects were less likely to develop MS, despite the fact that their vitamin D levels did not change significantly. MS rates are significantly higher in sun-deprived parts of the world — another reason researchers speculate that MS is inhibited by sun exposure.

Vitamin D pioneer Dr. Michael Holick has pointed out that UV exposure triggers the production of much more than just vitamin D in the skin, and that research has yet to identify the function of many of these metabolites. His point: They must be responsible for something, so it isn’t right to simply dismiss UV exposure.

“These results suggest that UVR is likely suppressing disease independent of vitamin D production,” the Wisconsin team wrote. “Vitamin D supplementation alone may not replace the ability of sunlight to reduce MS susceptibility.”

Dr. Oz Endorses Sunbeds

Television health guru Dr. Mehmet Oz — better known as “Dr. Oz” — said on his program this week he is re-thinking his position on indoor tanning sunbeds because they are an abundant source of natural vitamin D production as well as other compounds made in the skin.

“The sun provides vitamin D in a very unique way. But it also provides tons of other compounds besides vitamin D.” Oz said in an interview on his own program with health educator Dr. Joseph Mercola. “I am rethinking tanning beds. In the last year I have looked at a lot of information. …I think there is a value of UVB radiation, not just for vitamin D but for other sources as well.”

Oz was commenting on Mercola’s recommendation that use of sunbeds in the winter is a key to good health. Mercola is among those who believe humans need 8,000 IU of vitamin D daily to assure that vitamin D blood levels are in natural range consistent with outdoor living and at levels indicated by hundreds of studies to be associated with lower risk of health problems from cancer to heart disease and autoimmune disorders.

No food source comes close to delivering that level of vitamin D. UVB from sun exposure can make up to 20,000 IU of vitamin D in the skin without the risk of an overdose, as the skin naturally de-metabolizes any extra vitamin D.

When Mercola told Oz that he recommends sunbed usage in the winter Oz’s in-studio crowd reacted in shock.

The two health education icons — in endorsing sunbed usage to make vitamin D — showed that they still do not fully understand all of the photobiology of tanning equipment. Oz suggested that most sunbeds emit UVA but not UVB — and that consumers need to look for equipment that emits measurable UVB.

“Dermatology has been misleading Oz,” Smart Tan Vice President Joseph Levy said. “More than 90 percent of sunbeds today emit UVB and UVA in dosages consistent with natural sunlight. But we’re glad that he seems to be open to the fact that there is a natural benefit to UV from sunlight, and that sunbeds can be a good surrogate for that.”

Oz still says he does not recommend sunbed usage for tanning — just for vitamin D production. “Again, that’s not a straight distinction,” Levy said. “Tanning has nothing to do with vitamin D production — melanin production happens while vitamin D is being produced. They happen at the same time.”

Mercola also continues to make issue of magnetic ballasts used in some sunbeds, alleging that electromagnetic fields (EMF) are dangerous. But EMF levels generated by sunbeds expose users to less EMF than cell phone usage — very small dosages one would find in many electronic products. Sunbed industry representatives have asked Mercola to document the source of his allegation about ballasts but have never received an answer.

Mercola and Oz also refer to what they called “safe” tanning beds — those that emit UVB and which use electronic ballasts instead of magnetic ballasts. Mercola sells equipment with electronic ballasts through his web site.tanning, dallas tanning, coppell tanning, irving tanning, airbrush, spray tan, spray tan dallas, airbrush irving, spray tan/airbrush dallas.

Pain May Mean ‘D’ Deficiency.

“The classic signs and symptoms for vitamin D deficiency are often aches and pains in your bones and muscles and often physicians misdiagnose this.” — Boston University Vitamin D pioneer Dr. Michael Holick, talking about his book, “The Vitamin D Solution.”

Holick has promoted sensible sun exposure as the preferred source of vitamin D for decades — a conclusion backed by overwhelming research that outdoor workers have significantly higher vitamin D levels as compared with indoor workers and that vitamin D is scant in diet. Further, Holick has shown that millions of people have conditions that prevent intestinal absorption of vitamins, making it impossible to get vitamin D through diet.

Fight the flu by Tanning!

Studies connecting subjects with low vitamin D levels with higher risk of flu and autoimmune disease are getting more attention this winter – including a large feature published Tuesday in The Toronto Star.

“Vitamin D, also known as the sunshine vitamin, has a well-established role in helping to maintain strong bones. It’s now under the microscope for role it plays, when in short supply, in a range of illnesses, from heart disease to cancer, to autoimmune disorders and infections, including influenza,” the Star reported. “Our bodies make their own vitamin D when we expose the skin to the sun’s UVB rays. But our long winters provide minimal sunshine and weak UVB rays, erasing the opportunity to synthesize this important vitamin for many months.”

Tans are Nature’s Sunblock

Excessive avoidance and UV screening is a danger because it does not allow a tan, nature’s own sun block, to develop and as a result exposure is likely to cause sun-burn. The dogma, now fossilised in print, is that any tan is a sign of skin damage. Tell that to Darwin. Pigmented melanocytes in the skin are a system that protects it from excessive UV, which evolved long before the advent of sunscreens. Even if there was hard evidence that melanoma was UV-induced it would be all the more important to keep a protective tan.
